I’m a Swiss geographer and work in the field of spatial planning / spatial development.
I’m working at the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE) at Bern. I am responsible for spatial observation (e.g. land use change, socio-economic trends, regional development etc.). If you are interested in land use in Switzerland, I recommend visiting the land use statistics of Switzerland website provided by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. 3/4 of the Swiss population live in urban areas – so maybe you would like to take a look at our monitoring of spatial development in urban areas. Some of my work is dedicated to European spatial development as well, because ARE is the official Swiss ESPON Contact Point (ESPON is an EU-project on territorial structures and policy impact).
I studied Geography and Journalism at the University of Bern (Switzerland). In 1996, I finished Journalism (Communications / Media Studies). In June 1999, I made my diploma in Geography (on Public Relations in Spatial Planning Processes). For thesis and abstracts please go to “Downloads” (top of this page).

Besides other interests, I always loved travelling, especially through the United States of America. Over the years, I developed a deep interest in the history and geography of the USA. Besides reading a lot (my library is growing steadily), I especially like being “on the road”, having extensively travelled all over the contiguous United States during my 6 journeys since 1991 – you can find out more about this under “USA” (top of this page).
